Tri-boot Ubuntu MacOS Windows Guide

Disclaimer: I am not an expert, most of this was figured out by trial and error. I will try and help you if you need it, but most of what I learned came from Google.

Install guide for Dell XPS1530 (I am not going to go too far into detail, but I will tell you what you NEED to know. Anything further and to be honest I am probably not sure...)

1)Prerequisites
Get the following files downloaded (and burned to CD or DVD)
-- iAtkos 1.0r2 DVD
-- Kalyway 10.5.2 ComboUpdate pack
-- Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop Live CD
then get any data that is on the computer now off the drive.

2) Partition
Put in the Ubuntu Live CD and boot to it.
Start the Partition Editor by typing
sudo gparted
in terminal.

Delete all the partitions from the disk.
Set up the partitions I used the following setup:
15 GB NTFS (for windows)
15 GB unformatted (for macOS)
Crete new Extended Partition
1 GB linux-swap
14 GB ext3 (for Ubuntu)
the rest to storage (FAT32) can do that now or later.
Apply changes.
Close GPARTED
Shutdown computer (it will eject the CD)

3) Install Vista (or XP)
Install to the first partition, should show up first on the drives screen. No special instructions

4)Install Ubuntu
Once Windows is all set up put the Ubuntu CD in and restart
When you get to the desktop use "Install"
Most of the install options dont matter, but when it asks you about partitioning say Manual. set the ext3 Mount point to / and the linux-swap to swap.
Go through Ubuntu install.
Ubuntu Installer should set up and configure Grub for you, so that you can go to Ubuntu or windows.

5) install OS X
Once Ubuntu setup is done, verify the boot loader works for windows and Ubuntu
then insert the Mac OS DVD, and reboot
Click next at the "Click to continue" screen.
Go to Utilities->Disk Utility at the top
Select the partition for MacOS (should be the 15GB that has almost all space free)
Select "Erase"
Change File system to "Mac Os Extended Journaled"
Erase
close disk utility
coninue the installer until you get the customize button.
When you get to the screen that gives you the customize option, click it
Expand bootloades and click the box next to "Darwin EFI" to select everything under it.
Expand drivers->system->there is a kext (I think APPLESMBIOS) select that

SELECT NOTHING ELSE!

Continue the installer, it will not take too long, but may appear to have frozen.

After the installer finishes it will reboot. Mine then opened the Grub bootloader --> make sure to go into windows not ubuntu, if you let it get to ubuntu, just restart again

6)Bootloader
Download EasyBCD
Install and run it
Go to add entries and add one for MacOS and one for ubuntu, i Called mine OSX
Add another entry for Ubunto for easier boot later

7) Get into MacOs
Reboot, and select the GRUB option for windows
this will then bring up the menu that should have Windows and OSX on it, and Ubuntu if you added that to the list
Select OSX

8) Once you get in to MacOS use the comboupdate to update to 10.5.2
When that is finished, go to http://scottdangel.com/blog/?p=23 and get the installer for the NVIDIA card.

Run the installer (top and bottom boxes checked) and enjoy your MacOs with everything but sound...

Thx for the great guide. Quick question: I also have an XPS M1530 but only want to dual boot Vista and OSX. Do I have to do anything differently other than skipping the steps involving Ubuntu? TIA

It shouldnt be much different. I would still use the Ubuntu Live CD to do the partitioning. Try this:

Put in Live CD and partition to Win drive, and then leave rest unformatted (sudo gparted, delete all, new-> (Pick Size) and format to NTFS

then install Vista on that partition, get vista up and installed right.

Then boot to the live CD again
create 2 new partitions, a mac one, and a storage one (to share files between mac and win)

leave the Mac partition as unformatted, and apply the operatrion

Right click on the mac partition, and say Manage flags, and select boot

Use the iatkos CD to install mac as i said above

then fixboot and fixmbr on the windows drive (put in the windows vista cd, go to "Repair your computer) go to console, and do Bootrec.exe /FixMbr, enter, bootrec.exe /FixBoot)

Then do the EasyBCD steps (download, run, and add a mac entry)

Should work, if not let me know!

Is it possible to use the kalyway os x installation DVD directly ?

I originally tried Kalyway on my old E1505 and was unable to get it to work. Had the endless reboot problem, so I downloaded the iatkos. I never tried Kalyway on the XPS. Let me know if it does work for you.

Do yoy have a 8600GT video board ?
I've installed driver v41 from your link but seems didn't work... What are exactly the options that you select in installer ?

Thanks

I just followed you blog. It was good up until I installed the Nvidia driver. I chose to install the kernel and now the screen is just blank. I've waited about 5 mins now so I will wait a little longer but just wondered if you had any ideas about this. Thanks

Good walktrough. I ordered my Dell M1330. It will arrive soon. I would love a Triple Boot!
About downloading needed software: are these downloads good?
1. iAtkos v1.0i r3 (couldnt find r2)
2. Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD Intel Amd
(more info: http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4122511/Kalyway_Leopard_10.5.2_DVD_Intel_Amd )
3. Ubuntu 8.04 (this is the right one)

Unbutu is right one, but how about other 2? Please help!

One more question, how about dell media centre? When to install it? Is it possible to install it after triple boot?

I hope those software is good. I cant wait to install it all. When my laptop arrives , I ll IMMEDIATELY install the Triple-Boot!

Can't wait!

Good work (Y)

Is it possible to reply to posts on blogger? Do I need to change my settings?

Since I dont know I am going to reply Twitter Fashion.

@fabrizio

I have the 8400 video card. I installed it twice, once with 1st and third selected, once with 1st. I never selected the middle one. I would recommend just using the 1st. It seems with the Mac installs minimalistic is best.

@david

Sorry to hear about your problems. Perhaps try with just the first option? I had a bunch of different problems.

@anonymous

I used r2 but from experience I would suggest the iatkos. They seem more reliable. The Kalyway never worked on my E1505, never tried it on the XPS.

I wish you all luck!!!

Update to my above post. I have narrowed it down to a problem with NVDresman.kext. So I'm not sure if it is actually using the driver but still only shows 1024x768 for the display choices. Any ideas would be nice. thanks.

@david

I dont really have any ideas. Sorry. If I had a chance I would try it again but it always seems to just work for me. Sorry I cant help more, I just dont know enough about how it works to help you. You could try posting on ome of the boards about the driver.

Sorry!

Hi, I have an XPS M1530 as well. How could I simply have MAC OS X 10.5.2 + Vista installed and have a dual boot option when the computer boots up?

My computer came with Vista Home Premium.

PS: I've also been looking at this: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=83039

Tell me what you think. I'll check back.

I get my 1330 in 48 hours :D

Cant wait. Almost download everything from your list.

So 4 partitions?

1 Vista
2 Os x
3 Ubuntu
4 1GB for interaction between os's

Right?

How about Dell Media Direct. I would like to use that too. Do I need to make a special (5th) partition for that? And when to install it? (after witch OS?)

TY! cant wait! And great job!

Lerman said...

@samwell

Check my first comment, in response to the first anonymous.

@anonymous

Yes, at least 4. You will see the mediadirect partition. Just leave that one. You will have to set up an extented partition. Basically you will have mediadirect, windows and then extended, and in the extended you will have mac/ubuntu/share.

Good luck!

can I use iAtkos 2.0 DVD instead of the 1.0?

Lerman said...

didnt know there was a 2.0 Let me know how it works for you, shouldnt be much different (and maybe some bugs fixed?

is it iatkos 2.0 or 1.0r2? I used 1.0r2

Here read about it here. I'm new to the scene, you'll probably know what they're talking about more than I do.

Awesome to see a writeup like this. I've been running a hackintosh desktop for about 4 months now, and overall it's been awesome. I just happened to have ordered a 1530 today to use on the road. I hadn't heard of any successful osx86 installs. Now I can't wait to try it.

Lerman said...

@anonymous

Looks like they have simplified the install, and updated it to 10.5.2. I would say try just following the directions they have. And for the record, I am a newbie too, I just wrote out the steps I used in case others were having the same problems

@Ryan

Thanks,I spent a long time trying to figure out how to get it set up with all the different OS's and such. I thought it would be good of me to give back to all the people that helped me out. I figured posting what I did was a good way to do that.

Where you got drivers for OS X and Ubuntu?

Anonymous said...

Hello,
I dont have a sound on my XPS 1530!

Unknown said...

I have to ask as I'm making an attempt at this today...

Part1: Xp-32
Part2: Vista Ultimate-32
Part3: Ubuntu
Part4: Osx10.5

Possibilities, working with a 64 capapble processor...

Part5: xp64
Part6: vista64

Any known issues doing things this way?

not meaning to sound young... It's been a while since i've experimented with multios.

Not since the mac clone attempts in the mid 90's....

Sound doesnt work in OSX, at least it didnt when i still had it, sorry.

As far as drivers, I found most on google.

And you shouldnd have problems with all those different ones but I cant really easily help with setting it all up, because quite honestly I am not sure. I would try to help if you need. Just leave me a message at 610 628 0272

Just curious if anyone has accomplished this with the Kalyway 10.5.2 release? iATKOS is taking a while to get DL'd.

If I try to use Kalyway - without destroying the grum for XP and Ubuntu - should I run MBR or GUID - or will both break my current work?
